Cadillac Championship: Cameron Young remains leader on PGA Tour as Alex Fitzpatrick shoots up leaderboard

Cameron Young remains the Cadillac Championship leader after two days, having backed up his sensational first-round display with another eye-catching performance to sit on 13 under.

Young finally made his first bogey of the week but it barely put a dent into his lead going into the weekend.

He shot an eight-under-par 64 on Thursday as the PGA Tour returned to the Blue Monster Course at Trump National Doral in Miami for the first time since 2016, and followed that up with a 67 on Friday to remain the frontrunner on 13 under and take a five-shot lead.

Young's lone blemish was a bogey at the par-four 14th, where his chip from an awkward sidehill lie did not reach the putting surface. Otherwise, he was flawless.

He got the stroke he dropped at the 14th back two holes later, when he drove the green at the par-four 16th and coolly two-putted for his 14th birdie of the week.

"There's a lot of golf to be played on a difficult golf course," Young said. "But so far, I've played well."

Young played with world No 1 Scottie Scheffler, who enjoyed had a bogey-free 67 but ended the day exactly where he started it - seven shots off the lead.

"I definitely need to not get further away," Scheffler said. "No, it depends on how the golf course is playing. All I can do is go out there and be committed to what I need to do and that's pretty much it."

Fellow American Alex Smalley is five shots back from Young in second on nine under, while Canada's Nick Taylor and American Jordan Spieth are joint-third on eight under.

England's Alex Fitzpatrick enjoyed a brilliant day, moving 31 places up the leaderboard into tied sixth on six under after shooting a round of 66.

A week removed from teaming up with his brother Matt and winning the Zurich Classic - a victory that earned him membership on the PGA Tour - Fitzpatrick remained in good form on Friday as he shot a bogey-free round.

"The text messages and stuff has slowed down, but the overwhelming feeling of like joy and happiness is yet to go away," Fitzpatrick said.

"I think for me, this year, it's going to be a whirlwind and no matter what happens it will be a success. I can't believe how many people have come up to me and congratulated me...players and caddies and staff. It's been incredible."

Fitzpatrick had a ticket for a Sunday night flight that would have taken him from New Orleans to Turkey for this week's stop on the DP World Tour, then changed those arrangements in a hurry to get to Miami and begin prepping for his first $20m signature event.

He has called this week "the first day of school" as he gets a real taste of life on the PGA Tour.

So far, the report card has been just fine. He got through a five-birdie, five-bogey rollercoaster to shoot an even-par 72 on Thursday, then had the six-birdie, no-bogey day on Friday.

"I think the nice thing is it feels like I'm doing the right things with my golf game. I'm working towards the right things," Fitzpatrick said.

"It's exciting. I feel like my game has been good for a while now. I think for a few months it didn't really translate on the golf course how I would have liked, but it's really taken a turn the past two months. I feel in control of my ball, which is nice. So, hopefully I keep hitting fairways and hitting greens and we'll see what happens this weekend."
